What works in practice

Compress images before uploading. A 5MB photo on a slow connection is a frustrating scan — keep under 1MB if you can.
Match resolution to the use. A print buyer zooming into a photo needs the full-res file, but a menu thumbnail loads faster at around 1200px wide.
