About 2D Barcode QR Codes

Start with the distinction that decides whether this page is useful to you, because "barcode" means two different things and searching for it returns both.

Linear barcodes are the stripes on retail packaging: EAN-13, UPC-A, Code 128, Code 39. They encode a number, that number is looked up in a database, and the database holds the product information. Retail checkout runs on these.

2D barcodes are square matrix codes, and QR is the most common. They hold the data itself rather than a pointer to it — up to about 4,296 alphanumeric characters, versus the 12 digits in a UPC-A.

This generator makes 2D barcodes. It encodes whatever you type straight into the pattern. That is what you want for asset tags, inventory labels, library cataloguing and internal tracking. How to Create a 2D Barcode QR Code

  1. Confirm you need a 2D barcode, not a retail one

    If the code is going on a product for sale through retailers, you need a GS1-issued EAN-13 or UPC-A and this is the wrong tool. For internal tracking, asset tags and anything scanned by your own team, continue.

  2. Enter the text or ID

    Asset numbers, serial numbers, SKU strings, location codes, room identifiers, plain notes. The data is encoded into the pattern itself, so no lookup database is required to read it back.

  3. Keep the payload short

    Every character adds modules and makes the printed code denser. An 8-character asset tag produces a code that scans reliably at 1.5 cm. A 200-character string at the same physical size will fail.

  4. Raise error correction for rough environments

    Level H recovers about 30% of damaged data. It is the right default for warehouse, workshop and outdoor labels. It makes the code 32–43% wider per side than level L, so budget the space.

  5. Download SVG for direct-print labels

    SVG stays sharp at any label size and is what thermal label printers and industrial labellers want. PNG is fine for screens and office printers.

What works in practice

2D Barcode QR Code Best Practices

Encode the ID, not a sentence. A 2D barcode holding ASSET-04812 scans instantly at small sizes. The same code holding a description of the asset becomes dense, needs a bigger label, and fails more often on worn surfaces.

Use error correction H on anything physical. Asset labels get scuffed, frozen, greased and sun-bleached. Level H tolerates roughly 30% damage. The size cost is real but so is a label that still reads after two years in a workshop.

Print at 2 cm minimum for handheld scanning. Smaller works in ideal conditions and fails in real ones. Test on the actual label stock and the actual printer before ordering thousands.

Leave the quiet zone. Four modules of clear space on every side. Labels crowded to the edge are the single most common cause of a code that scans on screen and fails in the field.

Matte labels, not gloss. Glossy laminate throws specular reflection under warehouse lighting and defeats the scanner at exactly the angles people naturally hold a device.

Do not encode data you cannot change. The value is baked into the pattern permanently. If an asset ID scheme is still being argued about, wait, or use a dynamic code pointing at a record you can edit.

Keep a human-readable line under the code. Print the ID as text beneath it. Every scanner eventually fails, and a person who can read the number can still do the job.

Encoding a short message rather than a product number? That is a plain text QR code, which stores the words themselves and needs no network to read them.

Common questions about generating, printing, and deploying these codes.

Can this generate EAN-13 or UPC-A retail barcodes?

No, and neither can any other QR code generator. Those are linear barcode symbologies with a completely different structure, and more importantly the numbers themselves are licensed. A retail EAN-13 or UPC-A encodes a GTIN, and GTINs are issued to you by GS1 after you buy a Company Prefix — no software can invent a valid one. What is the difference between a 2D barcode and a QR code?

QR is a 2D barcode. "2D barcode" is the category — matrix codes that store data across two dimensions — and QR, Data Matrix, Aztec and PDF417 are all members of it. QR is simply the most widely supported, which is why a 2D barcode generator produces one by default. How much data can a 2D barcode hold?

Up to roughly 4,296 alphanumeric characters or 7,089 digits at the largest version with the lowest error correction. That is the theoretical ceiling and a terrible target. Practical asset labels hold 8 to 30 characters, because every character added makes the printed pattern denser and raises the size needed for a reliable scan. Compare that to UPC-A, which holds exactly 12 digits and nothing else.

Do I need a database to use these?

No, and that is the main advantage over retail barcodes. A UPC-A is a pointer — the number means nothing without a system that knows what it refers to. A 2D barcode carries the data itself, so a label reading ASSET-04812 / Bay 14 / installed 2026-03 is fully readable by any scanner with no backend at all. That makes it work offline, across organisations, and after the system that created it is gone.

What error correction level should I use for labels?

H for anything in a physical environment. The four levels recover approximately 7% (L), 15% (M), 25% (Q) and 30% (H) of damaged codewords. Warehouse, workshop, laboratory and outdoor labels all justify H. The trade is size: going from L to H makes the symbol 32–43% wider per side for the same payload, so decide the label dimensions with H already assumed rather than discovering the cost afterwards. Will a normal phone scan these?

Yes. Any modern iPhone or Android camera reads a QR-format 2D barcode natively with no app. Dedicated warehouse scanners and industrial imagers read them too, usually faster and at worse angles. This is a genuine advantage over Data Matrix and PDF417, which many phone cameras do not decode without a specialist app.

Is the 2D barcode generator free?
