About URL QR Codes

The URL QR is the backbone of every print-to-digital campaign that's ever worked. Someone scans it, the OS sees a web URL, the default browser opens the page. There's no platform layer in between, no decoder app to install, no proprietary scheme. It's the single most reliable QR type and the one that runs unchanged on a 2015 Galaxy S6 or a 2026 iPhone 17.

EZQR generates URL QRs free. Paste your HTTPS link, brand the code with your colors and logo, download PNG, SVG, or PDF. No watermark on any plan including the free tier, no signup wall, no expiration. The QR encodes the URL directly into the pattern, so the link works whether EZQR exists tomorrow or not — that's how static QR codes work everywhere, not a feature we built.

For links that need to change after printing — a landing page that'll get redesigned, a campaign URL that'll rotate, a destination you might move to a new domain — use a dynamic QR on the $5/mo Lite plan. The printed code stays the same; you repoint the destination from the dashboard. One reprint avoided pays for the year.

Walkthrough

How to Create a URL QR Code

  1. Paste the full URL including `https://`

Type the complete address. example.com won't work — the QR needs the protocol. Naked domains without https:// confuse some phone cameras and open in unexpected apps. Always include the protocol.

  2. Add UTM parameters for attribution

Append ?utm_source=print&utm_medium=qr&utm_campaign=fall-2026 to track which campaign drove the scan in Google Analytics or your CDP. Without UTMs, QR-driven traffic shows as direct and the campaign looks like it did nothing.

  3. Customize the design

Brand the code with your colors. Add your logo in the center — keep it under 20% of the code area so error correction can recover. High contrast between modules and background (4:1 minimum) is what scanners need under poor lighting.

  4. Download PNG, SVG, or PDF

PNG for digital — email signatures, slide decks, social. SVG for print at scale — packaging, signage, business cards, anywhere the code gets resized. PDF for the print shop. EZQR exports unwatermarked on every plan including free.

  5. Test on iPhone and Android before printing 5,000

Scan from at least two real phones. Verify the URL opens cleanly, the destination loads in under 3 seconds, and any redirects don't loop. A 30-second pre-flight beats a 5,000-piece reprint after one missing slash.

Where it works

URL QR Code Use Cases

Print ads, billboards, and out-of-home campaigns with UTM-tagged URLs so paid media gets attribution credit in Google Analytics instead of showing up as direct.

Product packaging linking to how-to videos, warranty registration, allergen info, or supply-chain provenance — turns the package into a media surface long after the sale.

Business cards linking to a portfolio, LinkedIn, booking calendar, or Calendly — replaces "let me send you my deck" with one scan.

Event flyers, conference programs, and trade-show signage with one URL per session or booth — attendees scan instead of typing 40-character schedule URLs.

Restaurant menu inserts, food-truck windows, and bar coasters linking to the digital menu, wine list, or allergen sheet — eliminates the laminated reprint cycle.

Educational materials — textbook QRs linking to video lessons, lab demonstrations, errata pages, and AR supplements that keep the book current between editions.

Real estate yard signs and open-house flyers linking to the listing page with photos, floor plan, and contact form — buyers scan from the curb without calling.

Direct mail and catalog inserts with shoppable URLs — the QR converts a paper catalog into the digital storefront with one tap.

Hotel key envelopes and guest-room TV cards linking to in-room services, spa booking, room service, or local recommendations.

Podcast cover art and live-show signage linking to the show's Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or hosted page — every billboard becomes a follow funnel.

What works in practice

URL QR Code Best Practices

Always use HTTPS — it's 2026 and Chrome flags HTTP destinations as not secure, which kills trust the moment the browser opens.

Keep the encoded URL under ~100 characters. Long URLs (especially with multiple tracking parameters) create dense codes that fail at small sizes. Use a URL shortener if the destination is unavoidable.

Leave a quiet zone (white border) of ~10% of the code width on all sides. Printing flush against a graphic or page edge kills scanner edge-detection — the most common cause of "won't scan" complaints.

Print at minimum 2.5 cm × 2.5 cm for business cards and arm's-length scans, 4 cm for table tents and packaging, 8 cm+ for billboards and storefront windows. The 10:1 rule: code width ≥ scanning distance ÷ 10.

Add an explicit call-to-action: "Scan for menu", "Scan to RSVP", "Scan to track your order". Naked QRs convert at half the rate of QRs with adjacent prompt copy that pre-frames the destination.

Use a dynamic QR on the Lite plan ($5/mo) for any URL that might change — landing pages, campaign redirects, A/B tests. The printed code stays; the destination updates from the dashboard.

Pair the URL QR with a short branded vanity slug as fallback text below the QR — ezqr.com/r/menu reads as legitimate; a naked QR on a wall reads as a phishing sticker.

For multi-language audiences, encode the URL of a server-side language-detect endpoint — visitors get redirected to the right locale based on Accept-Language headers, one QR for every market.

Test the destination on cellular, not just office WiFi. Pages that load in 800ms on corporate fiber take 4 seconds on a tower-edge LTE connection, and that's where most scans actually happen.
