Pick your brand colors, add a logo, and choose a dot style. Keep contrast above 4:1 between the modules and the background — the spec-compliant minimum for reliable scanning. If the logo covers more than 10% of the code, switch error correction to level H (30% recovery) before downloading so the code still reads through the overlay. Address QR Code Best Practices
Point the code at your verified Business Profile, not a bare coordinate. A profile-backed scan shows your name, hours, reviews, photos, and a Directions button; a raw pin shows a featureless dot the visitor still has to identify.
Use a map URL over a typed address whenever you can. The URL carries the place ID, so the pin comes from Google's or Apple's database directly instead of a geocoding step that can land on the wrong building.
Default to a Google Maps URL for any mixed public audience. It opens the app on Android and routes cleanly on iPhone; an Apple Maps URL is right only when the crowd is overwhelmingly iPhone.
Skip the raw geo: coordinate for a public storefront code. Android honors it, but iOS Camera resolves it inconsistently — reserve coordinates for places with no postal address, like a loading dock or a trailhead.
Print the written address beside the code as a fallback. Older phones, third-party scanner apps, and people who prefer to type all still need the address visible; it costs 10 mm of print and excludes no one.
Pair the code with an explicit prompt — 'Scan for directions' or 'Scan to find us.' A labeled code out-scans a naked one by roughly two to one because it resolves the moment-of-decision hesitation.
Size for the scan distance with the 10:1 rule, and add a 1.5× safety margin for outdoor light and older phones. A code sized for a page is unreadable on a yard sign from the sidewalk.
Use a dynamic code if you might relocate or reuse the printed asset. Static codes encode the destination in the pattern, so a move means a reprint; a dynamic code repoints from the dashboard in seconds.
For outdoor placement, use UV-resistant lamination. Standard interior print fades within 4–6 months in direct sun; UV lamination lasts 2–5 years for under a dollar a sign.
Verify the destination outlives the print run. A Business Profile URL can break if you rename the business; for long-life signage, a Maps share link tied to the physical pin is the safer encode.
