About WeChat QR Codes
Generate a QR code that links to your WeChat presence — your personal WeChat ID for adding as a contact, your Official Account for following (the WeChat equivalent of a brand page), a Mini Program (the in-WeChat app surface), a WeChat Channels short-video, or a WeChat Pay receive code. Scan with WeChat's in-app scanner, and the destination opens directly inside WeChat. Scan with a regular phone camera, and the URL opens in the browser with a 'Open in WeChat' prompt on most devices.
This is the QR hotels print to reach Chinese tourists arriving without VPN, the QR cross-border ecommerce brands print on packaging for the Chinese customer base, the QR conference organizers print on lanyards for Chinese delegates, and the QR universities print on recruitment materials in Asian markets. WeChat is the dominant platform for the Chinese consumer; QR codes are the dominant interaction pattern within it. EZQR's free plan generates as many static WeChat QRs as you need with no watermark, no signup, and full design customization. The $5/month Lite plan adds dynamic codes you can repoint when your Official Account name changes or you migrate between WeChat presences.
Walkthrough
How to Create a WeChat QR Code
Pick the right WeChat URL for your goal
Six destination patterns work. For personal WeChat ID, use the
u.wechat.com/{id}short link generated from inside your WeChat profile sharing. For Official Accounts (the WeChat equivalent of a Facebook Page), Tencent's admin platform issues a registered QR — encode the printed QR image as-is, or encode the public URL for the Official Account. For Mini Programs, the Tencent developer console generates a Mini Program QR; for general distribution, encode the Mini Program URL scheme or a landing page URL that redirects via theweixin://scheme. For Channels (short-form video), the Channels video URL. For WeChat Pay, the receive QR is issued by WeChat Pay's merchant console — do not regenerate, print the official issued QR.Customize the design without breaking the scan
Pick brand colors that match your storefront or campaign identity, upload your logo, and choose a dot style. Keep contrast above 4:1 between modules and background — the spec-compliant minimum for reliable scanning by both WeChat's in-app scanner and external camera apps. If you add a logo overlay above 10% of the code area, switch error correction to H (30% recovery). WeChat's in-app scanner is well-tested against logo overlays and stylized QRs, but external phone cameras are stricter; design for the stricter case.
Download in the right format and test on a Chinese-region device
PNG works for digital placement (your website, email signatures, WeChat-friendly listings). SVG is the right choice for hotel room cards, packaging stickers, conference lanyards, and storefront signage. PDF is the format print shops want for production runs. Critically: test the scan flow on a real WeChat-installed device (preferably a China-region phone with WeChat as the default scanner) before scale-printing. Some WeChat behaviors (auto-friend-add prompts, Official Account follow flows) only trigger when WeChat is the scanning app.
Where it works
WeChat QR Code Use Cases
Hotel guest-room key envelopes targeting Chinese tourists — guests arriving without working international data scan the QR to connect with the concierge Official Account, where they get translation support, restaurant recommendations, and local-area guides without VPN to access Western platforms.
Restaurant table tents in cities with significant Chinese-tourist footfall (San Francisco, Vancouver, Sydney, London) — diners follow the Official Account for menu translations, dietary notes, and loyalty offers delivered in WeChat where they actually check messages.
Cross-border ecommerce packaging — Chinese consumers buying Western brands via Taobao or Tmall scan the QR on the box to follow the brand's WeChat Official Account, building post-purchase engagement on the platform the audience uses daily.
Conference and event lanyards for delegates from China — the WeChat QR routes Chinese attendees to the event's Official Account where session schedules, networking lists, and speaker contact information are published natively.
University recruitment materials in Asian markets — admissions teams print the WeChat QR on prospectus PDFs, viewbooks, and recruitment fair signage; prospective students and parents follow the Official Account for application updates, deadlines, and student-life content.
Real estate marketing for Chinese buyer markets — international property firms print the WeChat QR on yard signs, brochures, and printed listings; Chinese buyers research properties inside WeChat where Western property portals do not have a presence.
Tourism board and destination marketing — visitor centers, airport welcome stations, and printed maps include the WeChat QR for the official destination Official Account; Chinese tourists access destination content (events, transit, dining) in WeChat rather than the destination's own website.
Western brand pop-up activations targeting Chinese millennial consumers — the WeChat QR on the activation signage routes visitors to the brand's Official Account where the activation collateral, future-event signups, and exclusive offers are distributed.
Luxury retail and duty-free signage — the WeChat QR at the storefront opens the brand's Official Account where Chinese shoppers receive loyalty tier updates, pre-arrival shopping appointments, and tax-refund logistics.
Trade show booths at international expos with Chinese exhibitor or visitor presence — the WeChat QR on the booth backdrop captures Chinese contacts into the brand's Official Account where follow-up is more reliable than email.
Educational program brochures and certificate-program signage — language schools, professional certifications, and continuing-education programs use the WeChat QR to capture Chinese-market interest into the Official Account messaging flow.
Restaurant menu QRs in tourist-heavy cities — the WeChat QR (paired with the main menu QR) opens the menu inside WeChat's built-in browser with auto-translation, removing the cellular-data friction that English-only menu URLs create for Chinese tourists.
Hospitality concierge QRs at airport pickup points and shuttle services — the WeChat QR connects arriving Chinese travelers to the venue's Official Account before they reach the property, pre-loading recommendations and check-in details.
What works in practice
WeChat QR Code Best Practices
Understand which WeChat artifact you are encoding. WeChat Official Accounts have their own QR generated by Tencent's admin platform (mp.weixin.qq.com) — that QR is registered with WeChat and works inside the app's scanner with the full follow-prompt UX. A third-party QR encoding the Official Account URL works for external camera apps but may not trigger WeChat's in-app follow flow as cleanly. For Official Account adoption, use the Tencent-issued QR.
Pair the WeChat QR with a CTA written in Simplified Chinese alongside or below the QR. 'Follow on WeChat' in English does not signal the destination as clearly to a Chinese-speaking scanner as the equivalent Chinese text. For mixed audiences, print both languages.
For multi-market campaigns (Chinese audience + Western audience), print two QRs side-by-side: WeChat for the Chinese audience, Instagram or LinkedIn for the Western audience. A single 'follow us' QR pointing to a Linktree-style hub converts at much lower rate than per-platform per-audience QRs.
Use a dynamic QR ($5/month Lite plan) for any WeChat QR on long-life print assets. WeChat Official Account names, IDs, and Mini Program URLs change more often than Western platforms (Tencent restructures, admin team changes, Mini Program rebuilds). Dynamic codes survive these changes via dashboard update.
Test the scan flow with a real Chinese-region WeChat-installed device, not just a Western WeChat install. Some Tencent geo-fenced behaviors (Official Account auto-follow, Mini Program native launch, Pay receive flow) only trigger correctly on China-region installs. A Western-region test scan may suggest the QR works while it actually fails for the actual audience.
Print at minimum 4 cm × 4 cm for hotel room cards and counter signage (arm's-length scan), 5–6 cm for table tents and packaging stickers, 8–12 cm for storefront window vinyl scanned from the sidewalk. The 10:1 rule applies, with a 1.5× safety margin. WeChat's in-app scanner is more forgiving on small QRs than external cameras; design for the external-camera case.
WeChat's stylized QR feature lets Official Account operators customize the QR design (colors, logo, frame) through Tencent's admin platform — but the customized QR must still pass scan tests on real devices. For brands without an Official Account admin account, the standard URL-encoded QR (generated by EZQR) is the universal option, but you lose some of the WeChat-native scan UX.
Do not regenerate WeChat Pay receive QRs. The Pay QR is issued by the WeChat Pay merchant console and tied to your merchant account; regenerating it via a third-party tool will produce a QR that does not transact. For Pay distribution, print the official Pay QR issued in the merchant console.
For Official Account follow campaigns, pair the QR with a Mini Program QR for the next-step action (book a service, browse products, request a quote). Single-action follow flows convert; multi-step funnels routing to the same Mini Program through follow → menu → action lose conversion at each step. Direct Mini Program QRs short-circuit this.
Use brand colors that pass the WCAG 4:1 contrast threshold and verify scan reliability on both WeChat's in-app scanner and the iOS / Android camera. WeChat's scanner is the most-used path for Chinese audiences, but cross-border scans (Chinese tourists using camera-app first) need the external-camera path to work too.
Place a Simplified Chinese explanation of what the QR does adjacent to it. For hotel signage, 'Scan with WeChat to follow our concierge account for translation and recommendations' in Simplified Chinese drives much higher follow-through than a generic 'WeChat' label alone.
