About Vimeo QR Codes
A Vimeo QR code exists for one reason. Control over what surrounds your video.
A client scans your portfolio card and lands on YouTube. They see recommendations, an ad, and a sidebar that may well include a competitor whose work is now sitting directly beside yours in the moment you most wanted their attention on it. Land them on Vimeo and they see your video on your page. For filmmakers, agencies, architects and anyone whose video *is* the pitch, that difference is the whole point.
Vimeo also supports privacy settings YouTube does not. Password protection, domain-level privacy, and unlisted links that stay unlisted. That makes it the right host for client review links and work-in-progress cuts you want reachable by QR but not by search.
Walkthrough
How to Create a Vimeo QR Code
Copy the Vimeo URL
A single video (
vimeo.com/123456789), a showcase, or your profile. Showcase links work like a playlist and are the better choice for a portfolio.Check the privacy setting first
A password-protected or domain-restricted video will show a gate to anyone scanning. That is correct for client review and wrong for a public portfolio card. Decide before printing, not after.
Generate and style
Vimeo blue (#1AB7EA) reads as on-brand. Monochrome usually suits portfolio and showreel print better, where the design should not compete with the work.
Use a dynamic code for showreels
A showreel gets recut. A dynamic code lets the printed card keep working when this year's cut replaces last year's.
Download SVG for print
SVG for business cards, portfolio books, exhibition panels and press kits. PNG for email signatures and digital.
Where it works
Vimeo QR Code Use Cases
Filmmaker and videographer business cards linking to a current showreel.
Architecture and design portfolios where a printed board links to a walkthrough or flythrough.
Client review links on delivery paperwork, password-protected so only the client gets in.
Exhibition and gallery panels linking to artist statements, a common museum and gallery pattern.
Press kits and EPKs where journalists scan straight to broadcast-quality material.
Agency case-study leave-behinds linking to the campaign film without YouTube recommending a competitor.
Wedding and event videographers putting a code on the delivery package.
Conference speaker cards linking to a talk or a demo reel.
What works in practice
Vimeo QR Code Best Practices
Use a showcase, not a single video, on a portfolio card. A showcase behaves like a playlist and survives individual videos being replaced. A single-video link breaks the moment you retire that piece.
Match the privacy setting to the surface. Password protection is right for client review and wrong for a card you hand to strangers at a festival. Scan your own printed proof from a logged-out phone to see what a stranger sees.
Use a [dynamic code](/qr-codes/dynamic) on anything showing a showreel. Reels are replaced annually and business cards are not reprinted annually.
Keep the code at 1.5 cm minimum on a business card, with a clear quiet zone. Portfolio print is often heavily designed, and the quiet zone is the first thing a designer crowds.
Note that Vimeo Basic has limits. Weekly and total upload caps apply on free accounts, and hitting one can affect availability. Check your plan before pointing a print run at a hosted file.
Print your name or handle beside the code. A portfolio card that only works when scanned is a card that fails in a pocket, in bad light, and on a dead phone.
Test the app hand-off. Vimeo may offer to open its app if installed. Confirm the browser path works cleanly too, because that is what most scanners get.
Vimeo QR Code FAQ
Common questions about generating, printing, and deploying these codes.
Why use Vimeo instead of YouTube for a QR code?
Control over the surrounding page. A YouTube landing shows ads, recommended videos and a sidebar you do not control, which on a client-facing portfolio card can put a competitor next to your work. Vimeo shows your video on your page with none of that. YouTube wins decisively on reach and discovery; Vimeo wins on presentation and privacy. For a printed card handed to a specific person, presentation usually matters more than discovery.
Can I password-protect the video behind the QR code?
Yes, through Vimeo's own privacy settings rather than anything in the code. Vimeo supports password protection, unlisted links and domain-level restrictions on paid plans. The QR encodes the URL; Vimeo enforces the gate. This is the standard setup for client review links — the code goes on delivery paperwork and only the client has the password.
Does the scanner need the Vimeo app?
No. The link opens in the phone browser and plays there. If the Vimeo app is installed the phone may offer to hand off to it. Test the browser path before printing, since that is what most people scanning a card will experience.
What happens when I update my showreel?
A static code pointing at the old video breaks or shows outdated work — which on a portfolio card is arguably worse than breaking. Two fixes: point at a showcase rather than a single video, so you can swap the contents while the URL stays put, or use a dynamic code and repoint it. Showcase plus dynamic is belt and braces, and worth it on cards printed in the hundreds.
Are there upload limits I should know about?
Yes. Vimeo Basic applies weekly and total storage caps, and paid tiers raise them. This matters for QR specifically because a printed code assumes the video stays available — if an account limit affects a video after the print run, the code fails silently. Confirm your plan's limits before committing a design to print.
Can I track scans on a Vimeo QR code?
Vimeo's own analytics report plays, finishes and engagement, but cannot separate a QR scan from any other visit. Add UTM parameters before generating, or use a dynamic code for scan analytics — scans, timestamps, city and device — alongside Vimeo's playback data. The two together tell you how many scanned and how many actually watched, which are different numbers.
Is the Vimeo QR code free?
Yes. Static Vimeo codes are free with no signup or watermark. SVG export for portfolio print and dynamic codes for showreels you will replace start at $5/month.
Should I use Vimeo or upload the file directly?
Vimeo if the video is longer than about 90 seconds, needs privacy controls, or already lives there. Direct video upload if it is short, self-contained and you want no platform branding at all — the 25 MB ceiling means roughly 90 seconds at 720p. Direct upload gives the cleanest playback page; Vimeo gives you analytics, privacy settings and no file-size ceiling.
